As travel continues to evolve, 2025 brings some important updates that travelers need to know about. These changes could affect everything from your ability to board a domestic flight to visiting your favorite international destinations. Here are the five most significant travel changes to be aware of in 2025, along with tips to help you prepare.

1. REAL ID Requirement for Domestic Flights

Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification (such as a passport) to board domestic flights. This requirement has been delayed multiple times but is now set to take effect this year.
What you need to do:
  • Check if your driver’s license is REAL ID-compliant. Look for a star or other marking in the upper corner of your ID.
  • If your current ID is not compliant, plan to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to update it.
  • Consider using your passport as an alternative if you already have one.

2. UK ETA Visa Requirement

Planning to visit the UK? Active now, travelers from visa-exempt countries (including the U.S.) will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the UK. This is part of a new system to enhance border security.
What you need to know:
  • The ETA is a simple online application requiring basic personal information and payment of a small fee.
  • Approval is usually quick, but travelers are advised to apply at least 72 hours before departure.
  • The ETA is valid for multiple entries and lasts for up to two years.

3. ETIAS Requirement for Europe

Traveling to Europe in 2025? The European Union will officially implement the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for visitors from visa-exempt countries. (Note: the start date has not yet been released)
How it works:
  • U.S. citizens must complete an online ETIAS application before traveling to Schengen Area countries, which include popular destinations like France, Italy, and Spain.
  • The application process includes submitting personal details, travel plans, and a small fee (7 euros, but free for under 18 and over 70).
  • Once approved, ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, allowing multiple trips within that period.
  • Tip: Apply for your ETIAS well in advance of your travel dates to avoid any delays (it is recommended at least 1 month before travel)

4. Entry/Exit System (EES) in Europe

Alongside ETIAS, the Entry/Exit System (EES) will launch in 2025 for visitors entering the Schengen Area. This new system aims to streamline border control and enhance security. (Again to note: the start date has not yet been released)
What you need to know:
  • The EES will replace manual passport stamps with digital registration of entry and exit data.
  • Travelers will provide biometric data, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, during the process.
  • Be prepared for slightly longer processing times during the initial rollout phase.
  • Tip: Keep your travel documents accessible and ensure they are valid to avoid any issues at the border.

5. Online U.S. Passport Renewal System

The U.S. State Department has rolled out a new online passport renewal system, making it easier than ever to update your travel documents.
Benefits of the new system:
  • Renew your passport from the comfort of your home without mailing in physical documents.
  • Faster processing times compared to traditional methods.
  • Status updates available online for better tracking.
What you should do:
  • Ensure your current passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
  • Test the online system early to renew your passport well before planned trips.
