Europe is calling and whether you’re hopping from castle to coast or cobblestones to cafés, what you pack can make or break your trip. At Travel a Latte, we believe preparing for your journey should feel as smooth and satisfying as the perfect espresso. So we’re serving up a guide full of tried-and-true packing tips to help you travel lighter, smarter, and happier through Europe!

The Basics: Less is More

  • Stick to a Carry-On (If You Can):
Many European airlines have strict baggage rules. A carry-on with a personal item is ideal for mobility and avoiding checked bag fees - especially with cobbled streets, small hotel elevators, and train transfers.
  • Pick a Color Palette:
Choose 2-3 base colors (neutrals like black, navy, or tan) and a couple of accent colors to mix and match. Think: capsule wardrobe for travel.
  • Layer Up:
Even in summer, weather can shift quickly. Bring layers—cardigans, scarves, and a lightweight rain jacket. In winter? Prioritize merino wool or thermal layers that are warm but pack flat.

What to Pack: Your European Essentials

  • Comfortable, Stylish Shoes:
Trust us, Europe = walking. Go for a stylish sneaker, walking sandals, or weatherproof ankle boot depending on season. Leave the heels at home.
  • A Crossbody or Anti-Theft Bag:
Especially in major cities, pickpocketing can be an issue. Use a crossbody bag that zips fully or has anti-theft features.
  • Adapters & Converters:
Most of Europe uses the Type C plug. A universal adapter with USB ports is perfect. (Note: When traveling to the UK and Ireland you will need G and for Switzerland Type J)
  • Small First-Aid/Pharmacy Kit:
Bring your go-to medications, especially since finding familiar brands or translations can be tricky in a pinch.
  • A Lightweight Daypack or Foldable Tote:
Ideal for excursions, beach days, or shopping in charming local markets.
  • Copy of Travel Documents:
Digital copies of your passport, itinerary, and insurance info should live in your email/cloud and printed in your luggage - just in case.

A Few Extras We Love for Travel Ease

  • Packing Cubes or Compression Bags:
Keeps everything organized and maximizes space.
  • Laundry Essentials:
A sink stopper and travel-size detergent packets come in handy for longer trips or if you're traveling with kids.
  • Travel Umbrella or Rain Poncho:
Europe’s weather is fickle. Be ready!
  • Reusable Water Bottle:
Many European cities have safe tap water and public fountains (like Rome!). It saves money and the planet.
  • Phone Lanyard:
  • Keeps your phone handy for lots of picture taking and helps avoid pickpocketing.

Family Bonus: Packing Tips for Traveling with Kids

  • Each child gets their own packing cube or section.
Use color-coded cubes to make unpacking at each hotel a breeze.
  • Entertainment essentials:
Headphones, a small tablet with downloaded content, or activity books for train rides and restaurants.
  • Snacks, always.
Local mealtimes may not line up with your kids’ hunger clocks, so have familiar snacks handy.
  • Foldable stroller or baby carrier:
A compact stroller helps in cities, while a baby carrier is great for museums, castles, or hilltop villages. Note: there are times when a stroller is not suitable for your European adventure.

Bonus Tip

Leave a little space in your suitcase for the unexpected finds, artisan souvenirs, and dreamy European boutique treasures. Trust us, you’ll want room for that handmade ceramic from Portugal or cashmere scarf from Florence!
