There are, of course, thousands of possible trips out there. There are plenty of great trips to choose from - and then there are trips that are great for you. By honestly focusing on what you want and need, you can discover your own unique travel profile and that could save you time, money and disappointment. Here are a few simple things that can help you discover your personal travel profile... 1. MAKE A QUICK LIST What were the most fun vacation memories you have? Make a list of as many as you can and notice if there are any themes. While you don't necessarily need (or want) your next vacation to be a copy of things you have already done, you can use those larger themes to guide the planning of future travel. That way, if you decide to step out a little from your comfort zone, you'll at least have a solid idea of what makes the most meaningful moments for you. Is it time with friends and family? A certain type of geography or weather? Specific activities? Quiet time? Build these elements into your travels and you will come home energized and restored. 2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO AT HOME? What do you like to do that makes you happy at home? Do you like to relax, unwind, energize or stay busy? Do you like to be still or active? Quiet places or in the middle of crowds? Scheduled or spontaneous? Simplicity or luxury? Inside or outside? These may seem like a lot of silly questions, but you would be surprised how often people book vacations that are filled with activities or set a pace that they are not used to or really don't enjoy. Step out of your comfort zone, but also remember what is comfortable for you. It is totally possible that you would love a week of biking in Tuscany even though you never go cycling at home. However, you could be tired and wishing for a car. 3. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE & REMEMBER? A part of what makes travel so amazing is its ability to broaden and deepen our cultural, relational and emotional horizons. Are you looking to create tons of new memories with your kids? Are you hunting for the perfect gift(s) ? Maybe you would like to immerse yourself in a new culture and language. Or are you craving for a service-oriented trip that allows you to give to others while embarking on an invaluable adventure. Plan your trip around the kind of experience and emotional takeaway you are looking for. 4. DO YOU HAVE CONTROL ISSUES? This can be a huge factor in overall enjoyment of a trip. Sometimes people think they would love to be in charge of everything, but when faced with reality and the hundreds of details that need to be taken care of before, during and after a trip - the fun gets zapped right out of the vacation. Will you be more comfortable or more stressed knowing that you planned every detail? Would you be more relaxed and ready for an amazing trip if everything was planned to run smoothly without the time, effort and exhaustion? When you take a little time to get to know yourself and how you travel best, your vacation can be more than just fun. It can actually be fulfilling and you can come home refreshed, energized and brimming with great new memories that will last forever!
