Recent unfortunate events involving American tourists in the Dominican Republic have led to many contemplating whether their vacation is worth the risk. Should you stay or should you go? After spending 12 days on the island with my family and other business colleagues in the travel industry, here is my view on the recent panic. Trending news headlines point at unsettling incidents and my heart goes out to the families of those involved. While many of these came to light in recent weeks, I confess – I did begin to think twice about our plans to visit the Dominican Republic. And… we went anyway! Why? Well, terrible things happen everywhere. Even in the United States. Wherever you go, you need to be cautious, aware of your surroundings and in tune with your own level of comfort. This is a lesson that has been drilled into my teenagers and this trip was a great opportunity to stress the importance of it and put it into action. While on the island, we found the people to be friendly, helpful and welcoming. Spending my time there at two different resorts, I never felt unsafe or threatened by anyone or anything. I did not encounter any issues outside of the resorts either. However, the unknown and risk is always there no matter where you are or what adventures you choose to experience. The answer to the question of whether you should “stay or go” ultimately depends on you. I don’t believe any travel advisor, family member or friend can or should make that decision for you.
I am personally glad we kept our plans to visit the Dominican Republic. We truly enjoyed our relaxing time in such a beautiful Caribbean paradise and I actually have clients currently enjoying their vacation in Punta Cana. If you are contemplating cancelling or booking a trip, here is the current State Department Travel Advisory for Dominican Republic which remains at Level 2 at this point. Great advice for anywhere you travel. If you decide to travel to the Dominican Republic:
