Oktoberfest is a legendary celebration that has become a global phenomenon. While it's celebrated in local communities worldwide, its birthplace in Munich, Germany holds a special place in the hearts of beer enthusiasts and festival-goers. It is also family friendly with something for everyone to enjoy! Traveling to Oktoberfest in Munich is something that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Whether you're toasting with a stein of beer, savoring hearty Bavarian cuisine, enjoying the carnival with your kids, or simply reveling in the vibrant atmosphere, Oktoberfest in Munich promises an unforgettable journey into Bavarian culture!

The Origin

Did you know that Oktoberfest is actually not in October? It kicks off in September and lasts for two weeks. Oktoberfest first began in October of 1810 as a grand celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The wedding celebrations lasted for several days and culminated on the first weekend in October. Everyone had such an incredible time celebrating that the following year, these festivities were repeated, and the tradition continued. Over time, the start date shifted to late September to take advantage of the better weather - truly a beautiful time to visit Munich.

The Beer Tents

The heart of Oktoberfest lies within its beer tents. These grand structures are not your ordinary beer gardens; they are intricately detailed, each with its unique charm and atmosphere. From the traditional Bavarian décor to the lively music and the scent of hearty German cuisine wafting through the air, the beer tents offer an unforgettable experience. And did you know that children are allowed in as well? There is a cut off time for when things get more rowdy, but during the day it’s perfectly acceptable to let your kids join in on the fun! One tip is to make sure to have reservations for your tents of choice as they fill up fast!

The Atmosphere

Describing the atmosphere at Oktoberfest is a challenge; it's something you have to experience for yourself. The decorations are truly intricate and unique to each tent. The music from the oompah bands playing traditional Bavarian tunes create an infectious rhythm that will you have swaying in no time. The camaraderie among visitors from around the world, the laughter, the clinking of beer mugs, and the feeling of togetherness create an indescribable energy that's truly intoxicating, even without the beer.

The Beer and Cuisine

We all know about the huge steins of beer at Oktoberfest, but did you know about all of the delicious food? Bavarian pretzels bigger than your head, sausages, sauerkraut, roasted chicken, and an array of other mouthwatering traditional dishes await you in each tent and at every corner of the festival grounds. Each tent has different foods to try and each bite tells a story of tradition, flavor, and hearty indulgence. Oktoberfest isn't just about hearty fare. You can also savor sweet treats like apple strudel and a variety of decadent desserts. With a diverse culinary landscape that caters to all palates, Oktoberfest ensures that your taste buds embark on a delightful adventure as you raise your stein and toast to the festivities.

The Attire

What do people wear to Oktoberfest? While it isn’t necessary to dress up in the traditional Bavarian clothes, many people do. Men wear lederhosen with a checkered shirt, suspenders and special shoes. Ladies wear dirndls – a special blouse, skirt and apron. These traditional outfits are more than just costumes or clothes. They're a piece of Oktoberfest's heart and soul, and as most Germans wear them, they make you feel like part of the Bavarian family as you soak in the good times together.
